Description

A representation of conversations about race from the perspective of a white person trying to educate themselves. Constructed by statements from those more knowledgeable on the subject. Including notes, thought and questions that came up in the process of making.

The sketches and shapes in red represents the discomfort, emotional turmoil, doubts and internalised defence mechanisms taught to us by a racist system.
Our Visual Language

Red ink represents the emotional reaction and discomfort about talking about race

Abstract shapes: swirling lines, sharp angles, interlinked

Swirling lines for the thought loops we get stuck in

Sharp angles for the instinctive defensive reaction

Interlinked lines to show how thoughts are connected and held together

Statements from people of colour and academics to amplify their voices and not hold ourselves as an example

Handwritten personal annotations to show how we learned as we engaged in the project

Different colours and fonts to show the different voices in the conversation, looking at many perspectives to avoid biases

Napkins for white fragility

Statements from those much more knowledgeable on the subject guide the conversation.

Messages obstructed by red ink because we have internalised biases from being taught in a racist society that makes facing the conversation more complicated.

The red magnifying glass represents the effort we need to put into educating themselves to create a more accepting and equal space for the people of color in our community.

It’s a growing moving piece made to be interacted with like a conversation
